Soy Based Formula
In some cases infants may require soy based formula because they cannot tolerate milk based formula. It is important to understand the difference between allergy and intolerance. Symptoms of allergy to milk based formula include hives or other rashes, respiratory difficulty and swelling. Sometimes symptoms are mild, other times they can be moderate to severe. Intolerance of dairy is characterized by gastrointestinal problems like gas, constipation, diarrhea and spasms. Babies suffering from colic may be switched to a soy formula as well.
You might think soy formula is a new innovation, but in fact it has been around since the early 1960s. It is the most popular alternative to cow's milk formulas. All babies need the right nutrients in order to thrive, and this includes protein. Soybeans are a rich source of protein, which is why formula and many other products are made from them. One thing many formulas made with soy do not contain is lactose or sucrose, more commonly known as table sugar. Usually babies who cannot tolerate lactose are sensitive to sucrose also.
Soy formulas are enriched with iron and various other nutrients, just as milk based formulas are. They are a complete source of nutrition for your baby up to twelve months. Some pediatricians recommend staying on the formula for a longer period if the child does not outgrow the sensitivity to dairy products. After your child is two if he or she still cannot handle cow's milk soy milk may be proposed as an alternative. Do not use soy milk as formula because it is not made for a baby's nutritional needs. Actual formula made from soy comes in liquid, powder and ready to feed forms.
Top brands like Similac and Enfamil offer soy based formula. Similac offers Isomil Advance Soy Formula with Iron, a popular choice for parents who prefer this brand and want an iron enriched formula. Enfamil makes Prosobee, a soy formula that has no lactose or sucrose. Prosobee is enriched with choline, an important nutrient found in breast milk. Choline, DHA and ARA are all elements found in breast milk that most formulas contain. If you think your baby would do well on soy formula, ask your pediatrician for his or her approval before making the switch.
